What to Expect at Your Pet’s First Wellness Exam

Vet examining dog and cat. Puppy and kitten at veterinarian doctor. Animal clinic. Pet check up and vaccination. Health care for dogs and cats.

There is a particular kind of nervous excitement that comes with a new puppy or kitten. The sleepless first nights, the search for the right food, and somewhere in that whirlwind, a first veterinary visit that can feel like one more thing to figure out. Take a breath. This appointment is simply the beginning of a relationship that will look after your pet for years to come.

At Oakland Park Animal Hospital, we have welcomed new puppies and kittens into our family for nearly four decades, and to us, your pet is our pet from the very first hello. Our wellness and vaccination care is built around making that first visit feel less like a checklist and more like the start of something good.

Why We Treat the First Visit Like It Matters

We are not looking at your new arrival as a case number. We are meeting a member of your family, and we want to know who they are from the start, nose to tail. Heart, lungs, eyes, ears, teeth, and joints all get a gentle once-over, and we screen for the intestinal parasites that so often come home with young puppies and kittens.

This first visit also becomes a baseline we return to for years afterward. Weight, temperature, and general condition recorded today help us notice small changes down the road, often before they become bigger problems. It is also when we start talking with you about puppy and kitten care suited to your pet specifically, not a generic version of their breed or species.

What Actually Happens When You Walk In

One of our team members will sit with you first, not to rush you along, but to hear the story so far. Where your pet came from, anything you have noticed, questions that have been on your mind since you brought them home. Then Dr. Ratnoff or one of our veterinarians will do a full physical exam, and just as importantly, they will explain everything they find in plain language. No jargon, no rushed five-minute visit. We answer every last question, because that is how we have always done things here.

Vaccinations usually begin at this visit or shortly after, depending on age. The American Animal Hospital Association recommends scheduling a kitten’s first veterinary visit within the first week home, with a vaccine series that continues over the following months, and puppies follow a similar path. We will walk you through the schedule that fits your new companion.

A few things help the visit go smoothly for everyone:

  • Any records from a breeder, shelter, or previous veterinarian, if you have them.
  • A fresh stool sample, if you are able to bring one, for parasite screening.
  • Every question on your mind, even the ones that feel small.

None of these are requirements. They simply help us get to know your pet a little faster.

A Calm Visit Starts Before You Arrive

New sights, new smells, and a car ride can be a lot for a young animal. A secure carrier that doubles as a cozy hideaway works wonders for cats and small dogs, and a well-fitted leash helps larger puppies feel steady. Treats in your pocket do not hurt either. A calm first visit tends to lead to a much calmer second one.

Because we are family-owned and operated rather than a corporate chain, your pet will see familiar faces every time they walk through our doors. We have clients whose pets have grown up alongside our team, and some who are now on their fourth or fifth dog with us. That kind of trust does not happen overnight, and we do not take it lightly.

This Is Just the Beginning

A first wellness exam opens the door to a much longer story, one full of follow-up visits, growth spurts, and the quiet reassurance of knowing someone is looking out for your pet alongside you. Puppies and kittens need several more visits in that first year to finish vaccines, track growth, and talk through spay or neuter timing, and staying on schedule now tends to mean fewer surprises later.

Ask us about our Stay Well Pet Plan while you are here. New puppies and kittens can join for 290 dollars in their first year, which brings routine exam fees down to 15 dollars and 84 cents and includes core vaccines, 50 percent off in-house lab testing, and 10 percent off flea and tick prevention, dental cleanings, bathing, nail trims, and ear cleanings. It is our way of making that first year of care feel a little less overwhelming, one visit at a time.

Come Meet the Oakland Park Animal Hospital Family

Four decades in this South Florida community have taught us that a first wellness exam is about far more than vaccines and paperwork. It is the start of a relationship built on trust, patience, and the belief that your pet truly is our pet too. We will be here for every visit that follows, the easy ones and the harder ones alike.

If you have recently welcomed a new puppy or kitten home, we would love to meet them. You can reach out through our contact form to schedule that first visit and start this journey together.
